Joomla, Wordpress & Drupal
Decided to install one of these content management systems at home. Thought this was gonna be a big exercise with lotsa headaches. Started with Drupal by looking for a windows installer. Surprisingly, couldn't find any windows installation in their official website. Got it from some other download sites, but a quick search told me Drupal was best installed in Linux, windows installations were very less. Was disappointed with that info.
Next, I decided to try Joomla. Got windows installations for both joomla and wordpress. Started with joomla, and it got installed like a breeze. Didn't have any complications at all, that I was surprised again. There were a number of steps involved but my experience in installing Trac and php helped me here. The steps for installing joomla may be summarized as follows:
1. Install WAMP server. This will take care of Apache server, Mysql and php installations.
2. Start all services, in the Wamp server.
3. In browser, open the site http://localhost/phpadmin
4. Create a database "joomla" in mysql, from the phpadmin page.
5. Create a user (admin or Jishin) and give full privileges, also from the phpadmin page.
6. Extract the joomla installation files to a directory inside the folder www (eg: www/joomla). Read the installation instructions document available on this folder.
7. Well, thats about it for installation. You may need to restart the wamp server.
8. Open browser and try the path http://localhost/joomla The configuration part after installation proved to be a bit more tough, with too many options and no clue where to start. Hung around niggling here and there, and managed to get a better picture. So far, I made a home page and added a few articles. Lots more to learn. With my new found confidence, i tried Wordpress installation, which proved to be even more easier. They have a 5-step installation process which handholds you through the installation process. In reality, it's not easy for someone who is dealing with a wamp or lamp server for the first time. My experience with installing the others helped me in this. The configuration dashboard for wordpress is hardly any easier. I have managed to create new pages but couldn't find a way to rearrange them. Anyways, both joomla and wordpress look interesting enough for me to have a go at both of them. As for Drupal, I'll put that off for a while, until I get a hang of these two.
